After all, you can simply detach a travel trailer from your car if you want to go for a drive without it. Travel trailer floor plans and purposes also vary, so you can find one that perfectly suits your needs. Settling on a travel trailer over an RV is just the first step; next you need to choose from an ever-increasing range. Here are some of the basic options.

Standard Travel Trailer

Don't be fooled by the name. The standard or conventional travel trailer is really anything but; sizes, layouts and prices range widely. But they do have one thing in common: They make sleeping outdoors feel like home.

Some models offer full kitchen and bathroom facilities, along with multiple sleeping areas. In other words, they offer almost the same functionality as a Class A/Class C motorhome or RV. For this reason, the standard travel trailer is a favorite among RV converts.

The largest models can sleep up to 10, so they're ideal for large groups—even when you're traveling in different cars. The lightest travel trailer models, by contrast, can be pulled by a family sedan. So all you have to do is hitch it up and drive away. Expect to pay upwards of $8,000 for new small travel trailers, and up to $95,000 for some of the high-end models.

The idea behind the pop-up tent trailer is simple: Glamping. Ideal for those who love the allure and simplicity of a tent, but can't put up with the discomfort, this option represents the best of both worlds.

When you want to "pitch" your tent, simply park up and extend the shelter from the sides of the trailer unit. Depending on the model, there might be a kitchenette and separate sleeping areas built in. But whatever option you go for, the pop-up tent trailer is one of the most compact, lightweight options.

Used ultralight travel trailers of this sort may be found for less than $6,000. But be prepared to pay up to $22,000 for a high-end brand new model.

Expandable Travel Trailer

There's not a great deal to say about this option. Just imagine a cross between the standard travel trailer and the pop-up tent alternative. It's somewhere between the two. Think of it as glamping plus.

On the one hand, you have the lightweight, compact utility of a pop-up, while on the other you have the amenities (kitchen, bathroom, etc.) of a more conventional trailer unit. They range between 19 and 30 feet in length and might cost $10,000-30,000.

Toy Hauler

This one's slightly different in that it's not designed for living aboard. Instead, the toy hauler model of travel trailer is intended for the transportation of your "toys": Your motorcycle, your jetski, your ATV or whatever you else you want to bring along.

Also known as a sports utility recreation vehicle, it's usually fitted with a rear door that opens out as a landing ramp. Since they're not intended for living aboard, they may be best suited to traveling in a convoy, with one vehicle trailing the toy hauler and another trailing a large standard trailer.

Truck Camper

Truck campers are all about freedom. But you'll need a flatbed truck. Rather than hitching a trailer to the rear of your vehicle—a hazard when it comes to winding roads—this model fits neatly into your flatbed.

Of course, they're not the best option if it's interior space you're after. But there's an undeniable elegance to the design. And, since your trailer hitch is left free, you can also tow a boat, toy hauler or suchlike. Expect to pay $6,000-$55,000.

Fifth Wheel

Fifth wheel trailers are designed for pickups with a fifth-wheel hitch. they're bigger than the standard travel trailer but in many ways along the same lines. Hence, they're popular among RV fans who want the versatility of driving around separately.

Models can measure up to 45 feet in length, and they often feature full kitchens and bathrooms. Some might even offer laundry facilities. For that reason, they're ideal for extended vacations and full-time travelers. They're not cheap, though; the top-end models may cost as much as $160,000 or more.
